Hank Hanegraaff, the host of the 𝘉𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘈𝘯𝘴𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘔𝘢𝘯 broadcast and the 𝘏𝘢𝘯𝘬 𝘜𝘯𝘱𝘭𝘶𝘨𝘨𝘦𝘥 podcast, continues through the Sermon on the Mount. In the wake of Christ’s command not to worry, the question arises, What is faith, and what constitutes a lack of faith? Job experienced the ultimate test of faith. In the span of a few hours, his servants were slaughtered, his possessions were stolen, and his children perished in a collapsing house. And that was only the beginning. Unbeknownst to Job, he was the subject of an extreme test of faith. God affirmed Job’s faith as firm and faultless; Satan assailed Job’s faith as fickle and fleeting. In the cosmic contest that ensued, Job responded with remarkable resolve, staking his fate and fortune on the trustworthiness of God. His eternal perspective forever enshrined in the words, “Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him” (Job 13: 15). In addition to truth, righteousness, and peace, the apostle Paul urges us to “take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one” (Ephesians 6). Faith is ultimately rooted and grounded in the nature of God Himself. In Christian theology He is portrayed as the Sovereign of the universe. He is described as spirit, perfectly wise, self-sufficient, omnipotent, and omniscient. The Bible depicts Him as the one who sees all and knows all from all eternity, the one who wields supreme and absolute authority. Thus, faith is a channel of living trust—an assurance—that stretches from man to God. In other words, it is the object of faith that renders faith faithful. Indeed, the greatest demonstration of faith is trusting God even when we do not understand. It is the sort of confidence exemplified by Job as he persevered in the midst of affliction, trusting God despite the whirlwind that threatened to blow his life into oblivion.
