The Theology of Illness—with Jean-Claude Larchet Hank Hanegraaff’s guest today is Professor Jean-Claude Larchet, author of the extraordinary book, The Theology of Illness. Professor Larchet is an Orthodox theologian, holding doctorates in humanities, theology, and philosophy from the Université de Strasbourg. As one of the foremost contemporary Patristics scholars, he especially studies the relevance of the Fathers to questions of health, sickness, and healing today. It is said of him that “he is one of the very few authors of our time who is able seamlessly to combine rigorous scholarship with a vibrant sense of the inner life of the Church.” Hank explains that The Theology of Illness played a profound role in shaping his perspective as he was going through treatment for mantle cell lymphoma. Says Hank, “this book gave me insight into my own illness that I have never had before—indeed, reading and re-reading The Theology of Illness submerged me deeper into waters of peace by washing my soul in the wisdom of the Church Fathers and their love for the Lord. Their desire to know our heavenly Father became my desire. Their experiences of profound spiritual intimacy brought me deeper into the transforming presence of the risen, healing Christ.” Truth Matters, Life Matters More is sponsored by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.
