If you have been on Twitter lately, you will be aware there is a widespread campaign to #boycottdisney. This is more than just about a disagreement over direction. The accusations are quite harsh. Here is an example:
What is going on here?
There are actually two things. One is Disney’s opposition to the “Don’t Say Gay Bill” in Florida, legislation that would not allow discussion of sexual orientation among the youngest student. The other is their intention to greatly increase the number of LGBTQ characters in their stories. You can read about it here.
But people are not just upset about Disney’s view of legislation or of character representation. An example is this post: Disney Executives Admit: Of Course We’re Grooming Your Children.
I have no problem with people unsubscribing from Disney + or avoiding their theme parks. Nor is it a problem to disagree with the direction Disney has taken.
But do we really believe that Disney’s plan is to “groom” young children so that they can be the victims of pedophiles? Is there a plan to get children involved in sexual activity of any kind?
Is it not more likely that Disney has adopted the belief that LGBTQ people are valuable, under represented, often the victim of discrimination, and who need public support. This is not a fringe belief and I would suspect that it is the majority belief in western countries.
I have not seen anything from the statements by Disney that they are promoting pedophilia or are encouraging sexual experimentation (of any kind) among children.
Disney does have an agenda, one that many conservatives won’t like, and this is to overcome the prejudice toward the LGBTQ community.
Feel free to disagree with that agenda, but do not make the unreasonable jump from pro-LGBTQ to pedophilia. Connecting LGBTQ to pedophilia is unhelpful and inaccurate. Most of the people I know who were abused as children were the victims of opposite sex predators.
By making these wild accusations, it actually makes the anti-Disney crowd look foolish. If you oppose Disney’s decisions, focus on what they have actually said and not the slippery slope that you fear.
